"Detective Sierra, I urge you to take a seat," says Chief Dale as she slams the file on her desk. I hesitantly sit back down, but the anger still remains. "We will go in and investigate, but we will not take unnecessary and dangerous measures."
"You don't understand," I say, my voice bitter and filled with spite. "That building is impossible to penetrate; otherwise we would already have people in there. I volunteer for this task." The chief stares at me and looks at my partner, who until now has not said a word.
"I'm sorry detective, but my answer remains and will stay as a no."
I couldn't help but swallow my anger and smile. The Chief was never a risk taker; I'm sure that my plan is a bit extreme, but one way or another I will get in.
"Come on, let's go," Eddy says, getting up. "We have paperwork to do."
"Right, thank you for your time, Chief," I say, following Eddy out the door. She's making a really big mistake.
"Breathe," Eddy says, after we reach my office. "We tried, now all we have to do is find another way."
"What is wrong with you?" I ask, my temper rising. "The entire time, I'm there defending 'our' plan and you're sitting there like a lost duck on the sea. I was clear that this had to be presented in a decent manner."
"Well," Eddy's hesitation is unexplainable. This morning, he was excited and thrilled to be presenting the case. Now, he is sitting as if he doesn't want any part in it.
"Well, what?"
"Well, I just think we may be rushing into something bigger than we expected."
"You think so," I say. "Perfect, so you're changing your mind on me. Where did you go this afternoon? You were fine before you left, something has obviously spooked you and I want to know what it was."
Eddy shook his head, his eyes resting on the floor before turning to look out the window. Slowly he gets up and places a finger on his lips. Something has happened to him and he doesn't want to tell me.
"I don't think it's a good idea to venture into something that is dangerous and can be the death of us," he says, with a straight face.
"You're a detective and you should start acting like one," I turn to look at his eyes, those grey eyes that are much more cautious than ever before. "I'll be coming up with some other ideas elsewhere."
I was about to leave, when Eddy suddenly grabs my arm. "There is a time, Detective Sierra, when everything you hold dear will disappear."
This is not Detective Richardson, this is not Eddy. This man is not my partner.
Who is he?
Eddy isn’t the type of man to hold me back; he would say that he has my back. I’m sure that whatever happened earlier this afternoon has to do with the building. I’m sure of it. I don’t see a connection yet, but I will soon.
I brake out of his grip, glaring at him. Without a word, I turn and leave my office. I can feel the anger rising within me; unfortunately I have to get it under control before unwanted tears start strolling down my cheeks.
There is something going on in this place. I can feel it. You would think that a case like this would have been opened sooner. All the chiefs would be making as much of an effort to bring down that building and the man behind it. But no; there has been no such move to figure out the mystery behind anything.
I take a deep breath before stepping out into the rain. The one day, my umbrella is in the car, it has to rain; just my luck.
